Abstract

Several of the Commission’s activities during the period 1984 and 1985 will be of interest not only to persons concerned with maritime transport, but also to those concerned with commercial transactions in which maritime transport may be involved. The principal achievement of the Commission during this period was the adoption in 1985 of the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration. Also in that year, the Commission adopted a recommendation designed to help reduce certain legal obstacles to the use of automatic data processing in connection with documentation and other aspects of international trade transactions. During the period under review, work progressed within the Commission and its Working Groups on a number of ongoing projects, including the draft convention on international bills of exchange and international promissory notes, the preparation of legal guides on electronic funds transfers and on contracts for the construction of industrial works, and the formulation of uniform legal rules relating to the liability of operators of transport terminals. In 1984, the Commission endorsed the recent revision of the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits, produced by the International Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the period the Commission pursued its program of training and assistance in the field of international trade law. The seventeenth session of UNCITRAL was held in New York from 25 June to 10 July 1984 and the eighteenth session was held at Vienna from 3 to 21 June 1985.
