Abstract

The barriers to hybridisation between V. faba and other species of section Faba were studied. Pollen tubes penetrated stigmas in all combinations. When V. faba was pollinated by V. bithynica, or used as a pollen parent with V. qalilaea or V. johannis, the pollen tubes ceased growth in the style. Pollen tubes reached the ovary in reciprocal crosses of V. faba and V. narbonensis but fertilisations were uncommon. Three combinations of parents, V. faba pollinated by V. galilaea and V. johannis, or used as a pollen parent with V. bithynica, resulted in many ovaries with one or more fertilised ovules. All of the embryos produced by these fertilisations aborted at an early stage. A decrease in crossability with increase in seed size of the V. faba parent may reflect greater divergence of the larger seeded varieties from the wild species.
