Abstract
The effects of poor soil physical conditions on a number of crops including beans is under investigation at the University of Nottingham. A preliminary trial conducted in 1982 showed that the passage of a tractor wheelings across the entire plot post-sowing could reduce the yield of beans by up to 48% depending upon sowing date.
Further experiments were conducted in 1983 to investigate the causes of such yield reductions. Significant reductions in crop height, dry matter and leaf area index occurred as a result of soil compaction but there was no difference in either plant population or combine yields at final harvest. Nevertheless, hand harvesting indicated a significant yield depression as a result of compaction.
