Widespread Landslide and Flood Events in the Catanzaro’s Isthmus (Calabria, Italy); Relationships with Rainfall Data

The Use of Historical Data in Natural Hazard Assessments

Part of the book series: Advances in Natural and Technological Hazards Research ((NTHR,volume 17))

Abstract

In the ambit of a regional research project on geological risk of the Catanzaro Isthmus (Calabria, Italy) we collected historical data on landslide and flood phenomena (LFP) of the past, well documented, because of its catastrophic damages to properties or to human lives, in the last one-two centuries. The events have been distinguished in accordance with the kind of phenomenon (landslides or floods). The events of the twentieth century were also related to daily rainfall patterns, to explain the connected relationships, and to point out forecasting methods and hazard evaluation. The levels of damage established for historical events give a good relation with rainfall data both for landslides and floods of the twentieth century. In situ observation and hydraulic analysis of cross sections show that a number of them are unable to accommodate the 100-year critical discharge.
