Abstract

Although initially volume imaging scanners for PET were based on alternative technologies such as multiwire chambers [Townsend et al., 1987] and rotating dual head gamma cameras [Muehllehner, 1975], a significant advance occurred in 1990 with the appearance of the first commercial multi-ring PET scanner with volume imaging capability. This scanner, the ECAT 953B (CTI PET Systems, Knoxville, TN) [Mazoyer et al., 1991; Spinks et al., 1992] offered both 2D and 3D data acquisition by extending (2D) or retracting (3D) the septa, a procedure that took less than two minutes. The ECAT 953B provided, for the first time, a platform on which to compare 2D and 3D acquisition and to develop 3D methodology. Following the lead of CTI PET Systems (CPS), since 1991 all multi-ring PET scanners are now manufactured either with retractable septa, or are fully 3D and have no septa. The aim of this chapter is to review current tomograph hardware designs for 3D PET imaging, and to compare the 2D and 3D performance characteristics of the different commercially-available multi-ring scanners.
