Abstract
Urban and rural milieus have complex interdependencies. Urban areas have long provided market opportunities for products and services from rural activities and urbanisation is one of the most pervasive processes of change shaping societies around the world. Urbanisation has long constituted a major drawing power on rural labour and capital. The implications of rural labour, entrepreneurship and capital flows towards the urban-industrial complex for rural community sustainability are substantial and have contributed to the cumulative decline of many rural communities (see Chapter 10).
