An Unfolding of Theory and Practice: From Ingarden to a Phenomenological Aesthetic for Opera

Contemporary aestheticians owe a debt to the phenomenological investigations of Roman Ingarden. His Literary Work of Art ([1931] 1973), Ontology of the Work of Art ([1961] 1989), and Cognition of the Literary Work of Art ([1968] 1973) have stimulated significant phenomenological investigation in literature and literary arts. Opera, a genre combining music and literature (as well as mise en scéne),did not escape Ingarden’s attention in his phenomenological inquiry.
