Compositional variation in magmas

  • Chapter

Abstract

In this chapter we survey the range of chemical compositional variation shown by magmas and discuss some of the ways in which it can be represented. The raw material of such a study consists of analyses of volcanic rocks, since these may be taken to be near approximations to liquid compositions, from which they differ mainly in the content of volatile constituents such as H2O and CO2 which may be lost during eruption. Plutonic rocks do not always give good indications of liquid compositions because of the role of crystal accumulation processes (see Ch. 13).
