Abstract
This article summarises the research conducted on children’s reading, in the Asia-Pacific region. The article is organised around a series of themes, which are common to a number of countries in the region. Judgements about the priority of researchable literacy problems are made somewhat tentatively, in view of the extraordinary diversity found in these countries — diversity in size, wealth, culture, literacy levels, research traditions, school resources, mother tongues and languages of instruction, to list a few of the more obvious differences. Thus, problems that are seen as pressing matters in one country, may be perceived as of marginal significance in others.
