Abstract

When forty years ago, I made my first attempt at preparing isolated hepatocytes it would have been quite impossible to imagine the extraordinary diversity of studies for which they would be employed. Indeed, many of the topics covered in this book were not even part of the body of scientific knowledge at that time, and it is pleasing to know that much new knowledge concerning the liver has come to light as a consequence of the availability of the isolated hepatocyte preparation. In this chapter I will give a brief history of the development of methods for isolated hepatocyte preparation. In Chapter 21 the results of some of the metabolic studies of our group are described in the context of macromolecular organisation.
