Abstract
Portugal joined the European Community in 1986, shortly after the approval of Directive 85/337/EEC “on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment”. Since then, and specially after the National Legislation on the subject was passed in 1990 — Decree-Law 186/90 and Regulatory Decree 38/90 — a significant number of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of different types of projects was done. Table 1 presents the approximate number of EIA‘s for different sectors, at the end of February 1997.
