The Quality Assessment of steroid hormone assays

  • Chapter
Steroid Analysis

Abstract

This chapter describes the general principles of Quality Assessment of steroid hormones, with detailed examples from those in the UK NEQAS operated by the author. Information on the more rarely requested steroid assays and the features of some commercial and non-UK schemes are presented in condensed form. Two works used in preparing the introductory sections deserve special mention. Stephen Jeffcoate’s book (Jeffcoate, 1981) remains the seminal text on the identification and management of errors in immunoassay, and is still fresh and relevant after fourteen years. The review by Uldall (1987) is a concise description of the terms and issues involved in quality, and is a valuable information resource for the relevant national, European and international standards and guidelines. Its bibliography has been updated (Uldall, 1990). An important new source of information on all aspects of EQA provision in Europe is the thesis by Libeer (1993), and a NORDKEM project report on The Medical Need for Quality Specifications in Clinical Laboratories has many useful articles (de Verdier et al.,1993).
