Abstract
During the reign of Hammuurabi’s son and successor Samsu-Iluna the political power of Babylon began to decline. Its end came finally in 1530 when the Hittite king Mursili I on a raiding expedition captured Babylon and sacked it. Mursili could not keep the town permanently, but it never regained its old status. The Cassites, a people from the Eastern mountain country, took the opportunity to extend their empire over Babylon.
