Abstract

The first mention of the marine flora of Rocas Alijos was made by Hanna (1926:28) in his general report of the California Academy of Sciences Expedition to the Revillagigedo Islands in 1925. En route from Isla Guadalupe to Isla Clarion, the U.S. mine sweeper Ortolan lay to at Rocas Alijos from 8 to 11 AM on April 24. Three members of the expedition, including Hanna, rowed as close to the rocks as was safe, and in the shallow water between the pinnacles they dynamited for fish. According to Hanna, “A few seaweeds which came up from the shots were collected.” Unfortunately, these seaweeds were not among the collections received for study by W. A. Setchell and N. L. Gardner at the University of California in Berkeley (Setchell and Gardner 1930: 111).
