Abstract
There have been a number of trials to assess the growth of high value rainforest tree species grown under plantation conditions (monocultures and mixtures) in the wet tropics of Australia. Many of these date back over 50 years or more. Only one species (Araucaria cunninghamii) has been subsequently used in an extensive plantation programme.
In the years since many of those trials were carried out plantation establishment techniques have improved together with our understanding of the ecology of some of these species. In addition, economic circumstances and the value of these timbers is changing. The paper reviews several trials involving young and old mixed species planting of rainforest trees and considers some of the ecological and silvicultural issues needing resolution.
