Probiotic Bacteria as Live Oral Vaccines Lactobacillus as the Versatile Delivery Vehicle

  • Chapter
Probiotics 3

Abstract

Present vaccines for use in humans for the major part are inactivated and depend upon (new) adjuvants (Claassen and Boersma, 1992; Gupta et al., 1996; Van Regenmortel, 1997). The properties of inactivated vaccines together with the nature of the adjuvants in general led to MHC class II restricted humoral responses which tend to have a bias to immunomodulation supported by T helper 2 type cells, especially in young individuals (Forsthuber et la., 1996; Barrios et al., 1996 a,b; Adkins and Du, 1998). However, protection against a number of diseases, especially viral-induced, offered by these type of vaccines is not sufficient since the activation of cellular immune responses is also required in order to clear the infectious agent and to get rid of infected cells. It has become apparent that the new generation of vaccines which are needed for protection against a number of diseases, but for which still no vaccine exists or for which the present vaccines are not effective, should fulfil several specific requirements (Gupta et al., 1996).
