The nature and durability of wood

  • Chapter
Preservation of timber in the tropics

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 17))

Abstract

Before deciding whether or not to apply preservatives the properties of the timber in question must first be considered in relation to two important aspects. Firstly the durability of the wood must be ascertained and this depends to a large extent on its inherent resistance to fungal and insect attack. Secondly it is necessary to know about its permeability to liquids. The decay resistance depends mainly on the chemical composition of the wood, while permeability is closely related to its microscopic structure.
