Abstract
Besides lipids, proteins, sterols and carbohydrates, membranes also contain another component that is often ignored — water. The association with, and distribution of, water in the membranes is not uniform and aqueous domains differing in location and physico-chemical properties may be found on the membrane’s exterior and at different sites in the membrane’s interior.
