Abstract

We observe thermionic emission from free refractory metal clusters Wn, n ≥ 5 and Tan, n ≥ 4, following excitation by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at its 2nd, 3rd and 4th harmonic. The ion yield from this process, which extends up to 5 µs for large n, dominates over prompt multiphoton ionization if the laser fluence is chosen properly. The appearance of pronounced wavelength dependent intensity anomalies in the size dependence of the yield is traced to the quantization of the attainable excess energy in the clusters.
