Abstract
It is now nearly 25 years since genetic studies of the process of nitrogen fixation were initiated. At that time the principal aim of this research was to identify those genes responsible for the synthesis of nitrogenase, with the expectation that this approach would provide some insight into the biochemical mechanisms of the process. The detailed understanding which we now have of the genetics of diazotrophy in a number of organisms testifies to the success of those studies. This subject has been comprehensively reviewed recently (Bishop, Premakumar 1992; Dean, Jacobson 1992; Merrick 1992) and therefore in this brief review I will attempt to summarise our current knowledge with particular reference to recent work.
