Plant Function in Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation in Legumes

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture ((PSBA,volume 17))

Abstract

While it is accepted that the understanding of the process of nitrogen fixation is best carried out in free-living nitrogen fixing organisms like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Azotobacter and Rhodopseudomonas, it is the symbiotic relationship between a nitrogen fixing prokaryote like Rhizobium, Bradyrhizobium or Frankia with a eukaryotic host plant that has stimulated the interest of plant biologists, microbial geneticists and pathologists.
