Abstract
Azorhizobium caulinodans strain ORS571 is a Gram-negative bacterium, related to Xanthobacter and more distantly to Bradyrhizobium (Dreyfus et al., 1988); it is a symbiont of the tropical legume Sesbania rostrata on which it induces nodules at predetermined sites: at the bases of lateral roots and at the dormant root primordia that are present on the S. rostrata stem as an adaptation to flooding. Stem and root nodulation of S. rostrata follow a similar pattern (Duhoux, 1984; Ndoye, 1991): bacteria infect by crack entry and proliferate intercellularly; they induce the formation of meristematic nodule foci and migrate towards the meristematic tissue through infection threads.
