Abstract

This chapter provides a simplified account of opponent colours theory—a theory which is often invoked to explain the psychological salience of the chromatic prototypes, the linguistic salience of basic colour terms, and, also, the colour categories they are prototypical/focal for.1 It is best to define certain technical terms and to discuss some of their implications immediately.
