Abstract
Disposition of excess weapon plutonium following the end of the cold war and execution of the strategic arms reduction treaties between the United States and Russia has been a topic of great interest in the United States for some time. At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we began to study methods for disposing of not only plutonium but highly enriched uranium late in 1991. Activities in this area were stimulated by a session [1] chaired by Dr. William Sutcliffe at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in February 1991.
