Abstract
The slider-crank mechanism, shown in Figure D.1, consists of two bars and a sliding block. Its components, the bars and the block, are called links. For the sake of definiteness we number the links as shown in the figure. Note that the ground, which may also be regarded as a link, is called link 1. It is in contact with link 2 via the pin A and with link 4 through the sliding guide. Pin B connects link 2 to link 3, and pin C connects link 3 to link 4. The purpose of this mechanism is to transmit the angular motion of link 2 to the linear motion of sliding link C, and vice versa. Such a mechanism forms the basic component in the internal combustion engine, for example.
