Abstract
This article describes the results of different types of assessment in mathematics education. It shows how a diagnostic instrument for arithmetic has come to be used for assessing classroom instruction and for assessing national goals in Sweden. It also demonstrates how diagnostic assessment can obtain greater detail by combining the results from written tests with the results of interviews. The diagnostic assessment of students’ complex knowledge and skills lags behind other areas in mathematics education.
