Hydrogenation in Aqueous Systems

Homogeneous Hydrogenation

Part of the book series: Catalysis by Metal Complexes ((CMCO,volume 15))

Abstract

Throughout the history of organometallic catalysis, water has been generally regarded as a medium which should be strictly avoided. Ironically, the history of organometallic chemistry started with the discovery of a water soluble complex [PtCl3(C2H4)]3− (Zeise’s salt, 1827) and there have been also other exceptions to the rule that organometallic compounds are moisture sensitive. The ability of [HCo(CO)4] and [HCo(CN)5]3− to catalyse hydrogenation was first reported fifty years ago; both are rather soluble in water, which is in fact the only suitable solvent for hydrogenations catalysed by the latter complex. So whilst it is still true that most organometallic compounds are best handled in a moisture-free environment, there is no à priori reason to exclude water as solvent for hydrogenation reactions.
