Abstract
Forests and woodlands provide a wide range of goods and services in support of human sustenance and local and national economies. In addition to wood and wood products such as fuelwood and charcoal, posts and poles, these include food, fodder and medicines, as well as shade shelter, the protection of watersheds, and stabilization and amelioration of soil.
This is an information paper based on note AFWC\981INF.5 presented at the Eleventh Session of the FAO African Forestry and Wildlife Commission, held in Dakar, Senegal, 14–17 April 1998
