Abstract

The worldwide deforestation and exploitation of natural forests during recent years has dramatically increased public awareness of this problem. About 12 – 15 million ha of forested area is lost annually in the developing countries of Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia (SOMMER, 1976). It is often not possible to restore native forests to their ecological complexity. Therefore, the afforestations are established as intensively managed monoculture plantations. Very few tree species are used in reestablishing forests. They must be adaptable to the climatic and site conditions of the sup-tropical and tropical areas.
