Microbial Treatment of Phenolic Wastes

  • Chapter
Environmental Biotechnology

Abstract

Various aromatic compounds (phenol and its derivatives) simultaneously are raw materials and/or basic products of the chemical industry. As a consequence the majority of them are wastewater components on processing plants. Phenolic environmental pollution of the Volga region constantly increases as the result of accumulation of untreated hazardous wastes from chemical plants. In addition treatment of large oil shale deposits by the pyrolysis method also resulted in the formation of phenolic wastes which polluted the environment in our region. All processes of environmental self-purification are very inhibited now by long-term application of high concentrations of pollutants in water and/or in soil.
