Abstract

Immature stoneflies are characteristic inhabitants of lotic water, including many very fast-flowing mountain streams. No South American stoneflies are known to thrive in standing or oxygen-poor flowing water, but several species inhabiting high mountain regions of the Andes have become adapted to cool, moist terrestrial habitats, where both the larvae and wingless adults are found (Aubert, 1956a).
