Abstract
The systems developed between the wars by the Polish logician Stanislaw Leśniewski (1886–1939) provide a formulation of extensional logic that is unparallelled for its generality, precision and intuitive foundation. Whatever can be done in the extensional logics of the tradition of Principia, including the so-called free logics, has its parallel in Leśniewskian logic, but in many respects the latter is less restricted, and in it everything is done somewhat differently, so that a Russellian who wishes to understand exactly what is happening has to modify his deeply ingrained habits. This fact, and also the lack of textbooks in Leśniewskian logic, explains why only a relatively small circle of logicians are working creatively in this field.
