Abstract
The quality of the environment in any country depends greatly upon an integrated water resources management system supported by appropriate and effective legislation. Prior to the present, Ukraine functioned under the former USSR legislative and institutional management system. The Soviet system had certain disadvantages that impeded the processes of efficient sustainable water resources management. Consequently, efforts have been made to improve the efficiency of environmental management in Ukraine. A significant example of the new approaches that are being implemented, particularly in the field of environmental information management, is the Regional Environmental Information Management System (REMIS) which has been applied to the Lower Dnieper basin.
