Understanding and Acting in Political Economy and Other Social Sciences

Abstract

Schutz’s own title was “Leitsätze zur Diskussion über meinen Vortrag vom 22. Mai vorbereitet für den Seminarabend am 27. Juni 1930” (“Guidelines for the discussion of my lecture of 22 May, prepared for the seminar-evening of 27 June, 1930”). This is another lecture given in the private seminar of Ludwig von Mises and announced with the heading of Verstehen und Handeln (Understanding and Acting). If Schutz had made further notes for the lectures they have not been preserved. Nevertheless, the guidelines provide a condensed picture of the major themes he treated. To the title Wagner added, “in Political Economy and Other Social Sciences”, in order to indicate the broad focus of the guidelines. In the copy of the typescript used for the translation by Wagner, the last sentence has been lined out with pencil by Schutz.
