Abstract
Despite of the considerable progress made in recent years in the field of meiosis research, relatively little is still known about some highly relevant aspects of this process. For example, an essential step during meiotic prophase is the synapsis of homologous chromosomes. In order to find each other, homologous chromosomes, which initially occupy different nuclear territories, have to move. However, the mechanisms governing long distance chromosome movements are poorly understood (for review see Loidl, 1990; Zickler and Kleckner, 1998; Sybenga, 1999; Scherthan, 2001).
