Abstract
A long time ago, as the gods were still descending from Mount Olympus, it so happened that Apollo found great favor with Coronis, the daughter of the King, and begot a child with her. Yet Coronis, with child, chose to betroth the mortal Ischys, son of Elatus, and everyone believed him to be the father of the godly child. When the raven, which at that time was still white, brought the news of the forthcoming betrothal to Ischys to the god Apollo, it was struck by that god’s initial anger; and, ever since, the bird has been black. Beside himself with rage, Apollo dispatched his sister, Artemis, to the home of Coronis. Artemis drew her arrows and killed the unfaithful Coronis and then brought a great affliction over the land, causing many to die. As the corpse of Coronis was to be burned and the flames were already blazing, Apollo regretted his action and cried: “It defies my patience that my son is to perish with his mother!” He took the child from within the womb of the dead mother, named his son Asclepios (lat. Aesculap), taught him the art of healing and brought him to the centaur Chiron, from whom he would learn the art of surgery (Kerényi, 1966, pp. 114f.).
