Abstract

Pragmatics has suffered from various debilitating diseases. In this paper I would like to point out one of them and to propose a certain cure; I shall do this by propounding new goals for pragmatical theories and by presenting some major ingredients of any theory which will effect those goals with a view to provide a remedy for a disease I would like to dub ‘Pragmaticitis Separatosis’.

Keywords

  • Constitutive Rule
  • Basic Purpose
  • Linguistic Behaviour
  • Radical Formula
  • Linguistic Action

These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.

This paper has benefited from comments by L. Jonathan Cohen, Joel Friedman, Jaakko Hintikka, David Kaplan, Hans Lieb and Stanley Peters. I owe special gratitude to my wife, Naomi, whose conceptions of institutions and rules were very helpful for clarifying some of the basic issues of this papter.
