Abstract
In Chapter VI we have studied the behavior of individual air parcels when they undergo certain physical transformations. We now turn our attention to several general aspects related to the vertical stratification of the atmosphere and then, in the next chapter, to the vertical stability of the atmosphere. By ‘vertical’ we mean that the atmosphere will be considered above a certain location on the Earth’s surface, generally taking into account neither the horizontal motions due to the Earth’s rotation and to horizontal gradients of pressure, nor the large-scale vertical motions.
