Abstract

Ion-ion collisions belong to the fundamental processes in all types of plasmas in astrophysical objects (e.g. the earth’s ionoshpere or the solar corona) as well as in laboratory discharges (for example in thermonuclear fusion). The knowledge of cross sections for ion-ion collision processes is therefore essential for the modeling of these plasmas.

In the field of ion-ion collisions, the most promising method for the investigation of cross sections is the use of two crossed ion beams. The main experimental difficulty arises from the fact that ion beams are very dilute targets. However, as it is described in this chapter, it is possible to investigate charge-exchange and ionisation processes by using coincidence and beam-pulsing techniques, respectively. Examples for the measurement of total cross sections for few-electron systems will be given.

Furthermore, the investigation of angular-differential cross sections allows a more detailed insight into the collision process and provides a test of existing theories on a fundamental level. In order to extract an angular-differential cross section from a measured scattering distribution, a transformation between the laboratory system and the center-of-mass system as well as a deconvolution with respect to the primary beam profile has to be performed. The results for such a measurement will be shown for an exemplary reaction.
