Abstract

There is a multitude of factors that have contributed to the low level of development of the northeastern region of India in general and Assam in particular. Although the lack of finance is an acute problem, there are other equally potent impediments to the development of the northeastern region. Failure of state and local governments, poor infrastructure, natural calamities, deplorable law and order situation, and most importantly the lack of political will at practically all levels are some of the reasons, besides finances, for the present condition of Assam and the northeast in general. These issues are discussed using statistics made available by the government offices.
