Abstract

Chile is recognized as one of the best places for doing astronomy in the world. From ancient to modern times, astronomy has been part of Chilean history. As any country, Chile now is facing the increasing problem of light pollution. The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the role of astronomy in Chile in a historical context, and the recent efforts by the local community of amateur astronomers to preserve this heritage.
