Abstract

In this chapter, I will make an attempt to sensitise the reader to the study of subjective aspects of quality of life by making references to the concepts of happiness, positive and negative affect, life satisfaction, subjective well being, and perceived quality of life. In Chapter 2, I will use the term subjective well being to mean subjective aspects of quality of life (happiness, life satisfaction, and perceived quality of life). I will highlight certain distinctions as discussed in the literature. In Chapter 3, I will present the reader with examples of common measures of subjective well being. This coverage should provide the reader with sufficient background to follow the logic of the concepts, principles, and strategies designed to enhance subjective well being starting from Chapter 3. Readers who are only interested in understanding how those strategies may be applied to enhance subjective well being may skip chapters 1–3 and jump right into Chapter 4.
