Abstract
Abstract This paper presents an investigation of the stability of a viscoelastic plate under creep condition. Of particular interest is the time-dependent characteristic of buckling load. Analyses show that creep buckling is a type of structural failure that may occur even when the stress remains constant. Under a certain in-plane compression loading, instability of viscoelastic structures arises after a time delay. This “delay buckling” event is more pronounced for a viscoelastic structure under creep condition. The critical load of instability is time-dependent and relies on function of material behaviors as well as the structure dimensions. Experimental studies are also conducted and the test results agree with the theoretical analyses.
