Abstract

Heavy metals which pose a threat to human health also damage ecosystems and species important to the quality of life. One of the organisms affected by these pollutants are the marine phytoplanktons which are essential to the normal function of marine ecosystems (Walsh, 1988). As primary producers, phytoplankton form the basis of the food chain and a drastic change in the population due to a substance and its accumulation by the algae may influence higher trophic levels.
