The German Chemical Industry in the Twentieth Century

Abstract

At the beginning of the nineteenth century in natural science and especially in chemistry the relation between universities and industry developed rapidly. Basic and applied research carried out at universities was closely connected with development and production in industry. Very often the researchers themselves transferred their results into practical use and manufacturing. Later on more and more specialization developed. Basic research, applied research and manufacturing separated and were carried out in different institutions and locations.

The following abbreviations are used: BAL, Bayer Archiv, Leverkusen, Germany; BDCG, Berichte Deutschen Chemischen Gesellschaft; FP, Fischer Papers, Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley, Berkeley, California.
