Weather conditions during 1980–1995 and tree damage directly attributable to weather

Forest Condition in a Changing Environment

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 65))

Abstract

During the 1980’s there were a number of cases of extensive tree damage that aroused considerable public discussion in Finland about their causes. Some researchers considered that the tree damage was caused by air pollution, and some put the blame on abnormal weather conditions. In the 1990’s the weather condition were less extreme and no corresponding damage was recorded. Subsequent research on the causal effects of the damage clearly indicated that the primary cause of the localised outbreaks observed during the 1980’s was, in fact, the abnormal weather conditions.
