Impact Polarization and Charge Exchange as Diagnostics of Proton Beams in Solar Flares
The aim of this paper is to show how accurate cross sections allow to calculate the impact polarization of the Hα line in the case of excitation of chromospheric hydrogen atoms by proton beams accelerated during solar flares. The charge exchange and the direct excitation processes are strongly coupled. The double charge exchange is a new process which, when taken into account, leads to a 25% more polarization after the global balance.
