Abstract
Particle sedimentation is analyzed in this chapter within the framework of the continuum theory of mixtures by regarding the particles and fluid as superimposed continua. We consider the problem of sedimentation of ideal suspensions in a thickener under gravity only. For batch operation, the thickener is called a settling column, and is filled with the suspension which settles, producing at the bottom a blanket of thick mud and a supernatant liquid. In continuous operation, the suspension is fed at some point of a thickener and two discharges are provided, a thickened slurry underflow at the bottom and a clear liquid overflowing at the top of the tank. In this manner of operation, the feed and discharge of the thickener are continuous.
