Abstract
During the 1980s boom years in New Zealand, there was a widely and conveniently held view that ethics was a personal matter and something for individual consciences to struggle with. There was, therefore, no automatic or even logical connection between business and ethics. It was generally conceded that the laws of the land must be followed, but outright, black and white illegality was really the only effective barrier to almost any business activity
This paper, providing an overview of the state of business ethics in New Zealand, is adapted and updated from two articles published in Management magazine in February/March 1997.
