Marker-Assisted Selection

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant Breeding ((DIPB,volume 7))

Abstract

The concept of indirect selection is attractive to plant breeders working to improve complex traits. For the successful application of indirect selection, a high level of correlation and/or linkage must exist between the trait of agronomic interest and the trait being directly selected. The selectable trait must be under simpler genetic control than the trait of interest and methodologies must be available that would favor its selection. For many years, indirect selection for yield has been practiced by breeders using selection based on yield components. With the discovery that visual polymorphisms were under simple genetic control, the concept of using these single gene traits as markers for more complex economic traits, became a reality. Basically there are three marker types: morphological (traits), biochemical (seed storage proteins and isozymes), and molecular or DNA-based polymorphisms, that can be used to establish linkages with traits of economic importance. A review of these markers will show that polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based molecular markers currently have the greatest application for marker-assisted selection (MAS) and therefore will predominate discussions within this chapter.
